A Rincon man was killed in a motorcycle accident Friday just before 8 a.m. on Old River Road in Effingham County.

Norman Harley Davis, 32, was driving a motorcycle south on Old River Road at a high rate of speed when he attempted to pass a Honda Pilot in a no-passing zone, Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor said.

“As he tried to pass, the Honda turned left into the Stonegate subdivision,” Ehsanipoor said.

The motorcycle then crashed into the Honda and also hit the entrance sign of the subdivision, deputies reported.

Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chase suspect crashes into pregnant woman

A woman with a history of DUI arrests led Effingham County Sheriff deputies on a chase Friday that ended in an accident on Zeigler Road.

Chelsea April Smith, 23, of Bloomingdale was first approached by deputies after crashing the Chevrolet Impala she was driving into a ditch on Zeigler Road, said Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Ehsanipoor.

Smith is a paraplegic and took off while the deputy was waiting for a jail transport van.

“Due to her health, a van was needed,” Ehsanipoor said. “She was asked to hand over her keys and threw the wrong set to the deputy,” Ehsanipoor said. “She had another set, and while the deputy was waiting and speaking with a witness, she took off.”

Smith continued driving on Zeigler Road until crashing into a Pontiac G8 driven by a pregnant female, Ehsanipoor said.

“The woman and her son had minor injuries,” Ehsanipoor said.

Smith will be charged with DUI, fleeing, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving, suspended license, deputies reported.

She was taken to the Effingham Health System for evaluation before being booked into the Effingham County Jail.
