An early Thursday morning accident claimed the life of a Brooklet man.

Mack Maye, 65, was driving a tractor-trailer westbound on Interstate 16, just after 3:30 a.m., when he lost control and drove off the roadway, rolling the truck over, said Gena Sullivan, Savannah-Chatham police spokeswoman.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes of I-16 just west of I-516.

Maye was pronounced dead on the scene. Metro’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded and is investigating.

Portions of I-16 were closed for hours as work was under way to clear the vehicle. This is an ongoing investigation, Sullivan said.

Sheriff on the move

Sheriff Al St Lawrence, his command staff and his administrative staff are moving out of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and into nearby office space due to the jail’s ongoing construction and renovations.

As of Monday, the sheriff and his staff will be located at 30 Park of Commerce Way, Suite 200, just off Chatham Parkway. This is located around the corner from the Sheriff’s Office Complex.

The move allows construction crews to begin the renovation of the existing building. These renovations could take up to a year to complete.
